The Unplanned Pregnancy Handbook takes a non judgmental
look at the options a young woman has when faced with an unplanned
pregnancy. I completed my Masters of Science of Education Degree in
Curriculum & Instruction from Southern Illinois University. As
an educator myself, I wrote this book in hopes that women would learn
from this book.
The book is written at a reading level that will be acceptable for
grades 7 and up. This book would also be ideal for college health,
sociology or woman's studies courses.
The target age range for this book is women ages 12-26. The book features
factual information about pregnancy, abortion and adoption. The book
also includes real life stories from women who have been faced with
unplanned pregnancies. These women tell their stories of how they
resolved their situations-whether they continued the pregnancy, had
an abortion or gave the child up for adoption. The stories are frank
but do not include any explicit sexual content. However, several of
the stories do touch on controversial subjects such as date rape and
drug use.
This book will be a tremendous resource to a classroom, a library
or women's clinic library. The book features a resource section filled
with web links to helpful web sites. The book also includes information
about government programs that can help a woman faced with an unplanned
pregnancy such as the WIC program and the Food Stamp Program. The
book also has a section for hotlines that can help a woman in a desperate
situation. The book also touches on advocacy groups such as Crisis
Pregnancy Centers and maternity shelters. There is also a section
devoted to related reading if the reader chooses to read more about
one of the topics covered in the book.
The chapter on abortion describes the abortion process. Abortion is
a controversial topic, and I must inform you that this book does take
a non judgmental look at abortion describing the procedure and ways
in which a woman can obtain an abortion. The book details parental
consent laws and waiting periods.
The book also has an entire chapter devoted to infanticide and child
abandonment. This is never to be considered an option when faced with
an unplanned pregnancy, but the book goes on to detail programs that
can help a woman who is considering abandoning her child, including
safe haven laws.
The Unplanned Pregnancy Book also describes the various types of adoption
and the adoption process.
I spent over 7 years conducting research and interviewing women for
this book. I'm sure that if you read this book you will appreciate
the educational merit of the book.
There really is no other book on the market about unplanned pregnancy
as this book. Please consider this title for your classroom, library
or women's clinic or advocacy center's collection.
